A month ago, one of my favourite coffee shops, Oslo, was gutted by a fire in the middle of the day, rocking the small chain, the Williamsburg neighbourhood and the coffee community. As the company battled to get back on its feet after such a massive loss, they decided to make some cash the best way they know how – by holding a latte art throwdown.

The judges pick between the two coffees battling it out and the winning design goes through to the next round

Tonight , some friends and I went a few blocks from Oslo’s destroyed shop on Bedford to another coffee place, Blue Bottle, to watch baristas from across the city battle it out for the best milky hearts or rosettas.

We gave $10 donations to get in, and they gave us back free beer, cookies and macaroons galore – and a lot of boisterous entertainment. Some of the winning designs were amazing!
