All summer I’ve enjoyed New York’s outdoor markets, but it’s getting chillier and darker, and no one wants to be browsing in the cold. Tonight I checked out a market celebrating crafts made in America – but thankfully this was under the gorgeous blue skies of Grand Central Station.

The two-day fair, American Made, is being hosted by Martha Stewart in the station’s Vanderbilt Hall. The market was so spacious, the stalls were put together so beautifully and there were tables upon tables of talent: dainty pottery, body lotions and fragrances, Christmas decorations, handmade note cards, delicate jewelry and delicious treats.

There was also a craft station so that you could get involved too.

Among my favorites were the button-shaped candies made by Andie’s Specialty Sweets. They also make edible scrabble tiles, branches, cogs and unbelievably real autumnal leaves – although I don’t think I’d ever want to ruin them by eating them.

I also loved the delicate, hand-painted sets of bowls by Gleena and some really neat designs by Non-Perishable Goods, which included vintage clutches, crayon cases, animal masks and tea towels. And for those with a sweet tooth and an eye for simple packaging, Danny Macaroons looked like a dream.

What I liked best about the whole event was that these guys knew the value of their wares so there was nothing superfluous crammed onto the tables. Instead, it was simple and calm and designers had the perfect chance to chat about the processes of their crafts.

Of course, it was pretty pricey and I balked when I saw a small box of chocolates for $28. But I can also appreciate the original one-of-a-kind designs, as well as the lengths the designers have gone to in order to source ethical and beautiful materials – so I was happy to shell out a bit of dosh (although I can’t say what because it’s someone’s birthday coming up…)
